2009 SMARTI MEDIA AWARDS

Official Rules 

 

ENTRY FORM: An entry form must also accompany each entry.  Without an approved signature from an advisor on the entry form the work will be disqualified.

 

RULES: 

  1. All entries MUST be created and produced by STUDENTS at any high school in the state of Tennessee. 
  2. All entries MUST reflect ONLY student work.
  3. All entries must be approved and signed by a qualified representative/advisor from each high school.
  4. Videos/movies will be disqualified for violating common standards of taste and/or decency. 
  5. A 2009 SMARTI Media Award “Official Entry Form” must accompany each entry.

 

CATEGORIES:

 

Non-Fiction Feature/Documentary/Narrative Stories: A stand-alone product that may cover any subject or area of interest.  Submissions must be between six (6) and ten (10) minutes in length, excluding credits.

 

Non-Fiction Feature/Documentary/Narrative Stories (short):  A stand-alone product that may cover any subject or area of interest.  Submissions must be no more than five (5) minutes in length, excluding credits.

 

Music Video:  Submissions must be no more than (5) minutes in length, excluding credits.

 

Animation/Experimental Video: An original script and concept is required and should be sent along with the submission itself.  Animation may be created through any traditional or digital means, including cell and stop motion.  Experimental projects should be an original concept using an unusual narrative or technical approach to present a compelling idea or set of ideas. Submissions must be one (1) to three (3) minutes in length, excluding credits.

 

“IMAGINE THAT!” - SPECIAL NARRATIVE FILM CATEGORY:

Students must contact the 2009 SMARTI Media Awards on February 2, 2009 (on website or contact info below) and will be given a film genre (comedy, drama, horror, western, coming of age, musical, film noir, gangster, romantic comedy/love story, war movie, etc.), a line of dialogue, a prop, and a character.  Students then have one month to write and produce a short narrative film using all the components above.  If any one of the components is missing, the film will be disqualified.  The film submission must be postmarked by March 2, 2009.  There can be no exceptions.  Submissions must be no more than seven (7) minutes in length, excluding credits.

 

JUDGING:  A group of qualified judges, both academic and professional, will be assembled to assess the quality of each entry.  Entries will be judged on creative content and technical considerations. 

 

AWARDS CEREMONY:  Will be held April 3, 2009 at Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Mass Communication.  A screening will be held at that time and awards will be handed out.
